In an attempt to determine the importance of websites on the Internet, Google has devised PageRank, which is a highly powerful ranking system. As a sidenote, the PageRank is a patented trademark of Google; the patent went to Stanford University, the institution where the founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page developed it. PageRank makes sure that the most important websites are granted a special place on the Internet. PageRank achieves this distinction by assigning a score from 0 to 10 to every page, with 0 being the least and 10 being the most important. All new websites start from 0 and try to work their way from the bottom up. Most website carry PageRank 0. It is highly advantageous for websites to move up from a PageRank 0 to gain visibility in the search engines and popularity.

As I have mentioned before, web spiders start the web crawling from the most popular website and follow the links to lesser and lesser popular web sites. In the case of Google, popularity is synonymous with a higher PageRank. So basically, the web spider starts its walk from websites with the highest ranking, namely PageRank 10 and moves its way down towards PageRank 0. Those pages with PageRank 10 are very popular and visible to the web spiders; the web spiders are attracted to them like flies to a source of light. The freshbot spider visits these websites very frequently. On the other extreme, sites with PageRank score of 0 might get very little to no attention at all. Web spiders read a page starting from the top left and ending at the bottom right. Upon encountering a hyperlink, they will follow that link to next page and start reading from there. In search engine optimization, you want the spider to follow a hyperlink from another website to your website. If you place a link from your website to another website it is not effective. The link must come from their website to yours.
